After the overwhelming response during Techfest 2010, we displayed the OoBi during HCI-India- IDID conference (http://www.indiahci.in/index.html) at IIT Bombay.

And here too , we had a really good time and got very encouraging response from the conference participants... Here are some snaps of the participants engaged with OoBi ..

Specially the foreign audience found the Fully filmy very interesting as they knew a bit about Bollywood (mostly through Slumdog millionaire i guess :P) and had lot of fun playing with it...

Some were not willing to leave the place :)

While some repeatedly visited, hoping we will add more contents....

Amongst the other interesting projects showcased during the conference, was the " Interactive tangible learning medium for non lettered" done by Ruchika Mittal (M.Des Interaction design, IDC 2008-10). Idea was to use the tangible objects(letter forms) on a common platform, which would act as triggers to audio-visual outputs that describe the letter form and combination of letter forms .

Another interesting project was the RFID tag based display done by Interaction design students batch 2008-10. Idea was each participant's info was coded in their ID' cards and when they came nearer to this display, the info was displayed along with their interests. People with common interests were matched and linked visually, as shown in the image.

So folks now its the showtime....The multitouch wall has been built and tested and put up for display during Techfest 2010 under 'Scintillations' exhibitions
We also had put our previous table 'OOBi Beta' alongwith the wall under the umbrella of 'OOBi - IDC , IIT Bombay'.

Fully Filmy:
Kumar and Atish has come up with a an interesting application called 'Fully Filmy' with which you can browse information of your favorite bollywood actor & actress. (http://oobi-idc.blogspot.com/2010/02/fully-filmy.html)

Some of the fun moments were when people fought amongst themselves over which actor/actress to choose & it was indeed difficult to control the crowd (as the app was designed to be used by two persons at a time).... though Kareena seemed to be a hot favourite :P

We also had a oppurtunity to meet Vivian from UK (also a member of NUI community) who displayed his 'Mezatop' during the exhibition.

So all in all, amongst the many hiccups like crowd overflow, heavy ambient light, camera & laser damage etc; we managed to pull off a good show and got a very positive & encouraging response from the crowd. And we hope to continue our momentum.. and very much like you all to be part of it..

Fully Filmy!!

Hi folks...
Last blog we talked about the new app 'Fully Filmy' and here are the details:

'Fully filmy' is a multitouch based application designed & devloped by OOBi team. The app is essentially a fun way to browse the information about your favourite Bollywood stars.

The main screen shows two scroll wheels one each for actors and actresses who form the spokes of the wheels.

(Currently the spokes are static in terms of numbers, but we are planning to make mode dynamic...)

The idea is, as you move, rotate the scroll wheels and form a pair of actor & actress by matching them together, you will get links to the movies they have done together (right now just one link per pair is available).

As you click on the links, detailed information about that movie is displayed in form of images(wallpapers, posters), songs & videos (trailers) and users can browse it using multi touch gestures like zoom,pan, rotate etc.

Areas of improvement:

Currently the app supports fixed & limited content, which further we are planning to make more dynamic , as in everytime you match a pair you will get new information .
Also we content wise we'll go beyond images & movies and try to provide small subapps relevant to each pair.
Support more than 2 users and make it a large scale app that can be displayed over MT wall

Multitouch Wall in making...

After the successful display of OOBi beta during Sustainability conference in Nov 2009, we decided to go BIG and create a bigger multitouch display. So we planned to build a Multitouch wall [1.6m x 0.9 m] to be displayed during Techfest 2010 at IIT Bombay. We decided to use Laser Light Plane method.

Here is how we constructed the wall:
This is the rear projection screen sandwiched among glass layers.

Screen and frame assembly.

Finally our frame & stand is ready, for laser testing.
The major hassle during the project was alignment of lasers, which eventually we got correct after lot of efforts.

And here we have the first application tested which was water ripples ...believe me it feels so good to touch on so big wall ... :P

Finally we had set up the Wall for Techfest Scintillations and got very good response from audience. (Details in the next blog.)

The whole project has been a lot of hard of hard work, trials n errors but more importantly 'Fun' .. We had gud support from lot of friends this time.. just a little vote of thanks :

OOBI at Sustainibility conference !!

Folks ,
finally the table is ready and we had put it up during the sustainibility conference held at IDC , IIT Bombay http://www.inaplanetofourown.net/...

And we got a really nice response from the audience .
They all enjoyed using the apps and were creatively engaged while playing with them.

4. We tried a new multitouch based game 'Trash O Bin' in line with the theme of conference.
The idea was to educate people about importance of seggregating material into recyclable and non- recyclable sothat they can be re-used /expended effectively.

Goal of the game is to sort the waste mateial [Food items, Glass, Plastics, Paper] into correct bins and score points for correct sorting. In case of wrong sorting you will lose the points.

5.This was the logo exploration we tried out for OOBI also indicating the finger & the touch, however still needs refinement.

OOBI table in making !!

Hi all this is further update to our successful prototype...
We had taken up making a finished looking table and here we are repeating the whole process

We also added a protective sheet on top of this surface...

3.Huhh...! finally its ready and here some pics of trials

and great it works really well...

So we planning to put up this beauty at upcoming Sustainability conference and we are also developing a multitouch game for it.

OOBI Beta - OOBI version next

After the app laudable success of OOBI multitouch installation at DDS 2008 , we wanted to take it to the next level and build an advanced standalone multitouch table similar to MS surface.

With constant encouragement & support from Prof Ravi Poovaiah we continued this project at IDC (http://www.idc.iitb.ac.in/) and worked on weekends.
We intented to finish and put it up in DDS 2009 (http://www.dds2009.org/home.html). But the trials took a lot longer than expected . Finally Saurav joined the team and together we could achieve some exciting results.

Though the final table is not yet finished we are hoping to complete it by Nov first week.However we already named it as OOBI- beta [Next version of OOBI :) ]

The first amazing and exploratory project done at IDC

DDS was nearing and being from the first batch of the only Interaction Design in India we had great responsibility of coming up with something wonderful that will give idea about what Interaction Design is to the local people of Mumbai who are not tech savvy or common people unknown to latest technologies emerging around the world, who visit our annual Design Degree Show - Degree 44.

Been called as The Hole - Diggers we had to digg more than our academic the projects which were done at IDC and make something that gives WOW!!! factors in the people while experiencing the Design. This ignited us with the thought of making a Multitouch Interface. The Projection of Multitouch was decided to be projected onto the large screen inorder that the people around can actually see what is going on and then experince it.

The Project had to have a name, after ideations and several iterations we decieded to call our multitouch interface as OoBI - Out of the Box Interaction. We called it OoBI because of ability to involve people who are interacting and who are around, with the screen outside the box which actually manipulates the projected screen.

We would like to thank NUI with the help of whom we could build our Multitouch Interface. We came up with this poster to have of branding to our Prototype.
